Tourism is one of the world's largest economic sectors, and its growth has significant implications for energy consumption and environmental sustainability. The tourism-energy nexus has received increasing attention as destinations seek to balance economic benefits with environmental responsibility.

Demand drivers — Transportation, accommodation, and recreational activities all contribute to tourism-related energy use. Air travel remains the most energy-intensive component, though ground transport and hotel operations are also significant. Seasonal peaks in demand can strain local grids in tourism-dependent regions.

Sustainable tourism — Renewable energy adoption in the tourism sector—solar panels on hotels, electric vehicle fleets, and green certifications—is growing. Research shows that tourists increasingly value sustainability, creating market incentives for the industry to decarbonise. Integrated policy approaches that link tourism development with clean energy investment can yield co-benefits.
