Hydropower remains one of the oldest and most widely used renewable energy technologies.

By harnessing the energy of flowing water, hydroelectric dams convert gravitational potential energy into electricity through turbine systems. Globally, hydropower provides a significant share of renewable electricity generation and plays a crucial role in maintaining grid stability.

Unlike solar and wind power—which depend on weather conditions—hydropower facilities can often adjust electricity output to match demand patterns. This flexibility makes hydropower particularly valuable for balancing electricity systems with high shares of variable renewable generation.

Reservoir functions — Large hydroelectric dams typically include reservoirs that store water and regulate flow through turbines. These reservoirs can also serve additional functions such as flood control, irrigation support, and water supply management.

However, hydropower projects must also address environmental and social considerations. Large dams can affect river ecosystems, sediment flows, and local communities. Modern hydropower planning therefore increasingly includes environmental assessments, fish migration solutions, and sustainable water management practices.

Despite these challenges, hydropower continues to play a central role in the global renewable energy mix. As electricity systems integrate larger amounts of solar and wind power, hydropower's ability to provide flexible and dispatchable electricity becomes even more valuable.

The large dam shown in the image represents the scale and infrastructure required to deliver reliable renewable electricity to national power systems.
